But, what is a microclimate?
Real Academia Española definition:
A local climate with characteristics different from the surrounding area.
Oxford Languages definition:
The set of particular climatic conditions of a specific place, resulting from a more or less significant and localized modification of the climate of the surrounding area, influenced by various ecological and environmental factors.
My definition:
It is a set of specific socio-environmental conditions that occur in a small area within a larger environment. Each microclimate interacts with its surroundings without losing its essence, thanks to its resilience. However, when external changes exceed its adaptive capacity, the microclimate may transform into an entirely new system. Some of the factors that influence a microclimate are:
Geology → Type of soil and terrain structure.
Hydrology → Presence and movement of water.
Temperature → Thermal variations.
Altitude → Atmospheric pressure.
CHALLENGE: Avocados
Buy 4 semi-ripe avocados and consume them over 4 weeks, making sure each one reaches its perfect ripening point at the exact time.
To do this, you’ll need to understand and use the microclimates in your kitchen and refrigerator. For example, placing an avocado near a heat source will speed up ripening, while storing it in the refrigerator will slow down the process.
Apply your knowledge of microclimates to achieve this and enjoy perfectly ripened avocados each week! We’ll do the same with your plants!
